I want to be remembered

I want to be remembered
As a mother
As a grandmother
As a wife
As a friend

I don't want my great, great ancestors to look at the old fashioned pictures
and wonder, who is that woman
Who was she to me
Why didn't anyone write her name on this picture

I want to be remembered
by my children
by my grandchildren
By my great, and great great grandchildren and beyond

Because you see though not yet born, the DNA holds them
Already I love them
I wish for them all the world has to offer
I wish them strong minds and strong bodies, courageous spirits and brave hearts

I wish them faith in God
And fellowship with other than human life
I wish them to understand the caress of their Father/Mother in heaven
I wish them to know that's whose company I will be keeping when they are born

I'll see their first romances
Their first kisses
Their first labor pains
Their first babies born perfect and innocent as they were

I want to be remembered
As a mother
As a grandmother
As a wife
As a friend

Family Photo: Great Grandparents J.C. and Olive Gilmore and 5 of 6 daughters and 1 son. Sunrise Sister "believes" her Grandmother Anne is second girl from the left....all the others are Great Aunts. We know their names but have not yet been able to connect each name with a face.

Thank you so much for visiting today. This post literally poured itself on the page; funny how some things just seem waiting to be said:) Thank you for reading it!

  4. I love the old family photos that I have of my family. Since I was a young child I would sit and stare at each one, imagining who the person was, what they were thinking, who they became, even though I never met most of them. I love looking at this photo as well. I pray that you will be remembered in all the ways that matter to this world.

    Love....

  6. I have to admit - there's something in my heart that glazes over when I see old photos like this and read this sort of thing. It's because I was adopted, so I have no feeling of connection to ancestors. The first person I met who I'm biologically related to is my oldest daughter. I've tried to feel connected to my adoptive ancestors, but it's just not the same.

What inspires me in this post is what you say about those not yet born. I may not be able to extend my ancestral sense of connection backward, but I can definitely extend it forward.

  7. Pollinatrix,

Thank you so much for your comment today. I have thought about the ancestry of those who are adopted. We have adopted members in our greater family and as I glory in finding my heritage, I have a sense of guilt about lauding it. Yet, I am SO thrilled that you've seen the forward vision of this piece of poetry because I meant that to happen and to have you say that the words drew your mind to forward is a blessing to me today!!

  9. Hi! I found your blog while researching the history of my home. I live in a historic home in Oklahoma City and found the name JC and Olive Gilmore and that they owned the home I now currently live in back in 1921. Could this be them?! I sure hope so because I have been looking for photos of families and our home for four years with very little luck until recently!

  10. hi christa - i am Sunrise Sister's sister... and i am so excited to receive your message. yes, those are the gilmores. they lived in OKC during that time period and according to the 1920 census j.c., olive and two of their daughters, ruth and dorothy, lived together then.

we have only recently found all of these gilmores ourselves, so your message comes at a wonderful time. you now officially have a photo of your home's family. i estimate this one was taken around 1915.

i'll let SS respond a little more, but i just couldn't help myself :-)

  11. Hi Christa - very exciting to hear from you! Sounds like our great grandparents are the Gilmores of your searching. Lucy pretty much filled you in on what you needed to know. I was eager to share the news with her but I see she already knows it!

Is there something in particular that you would like to have from us? We, of course, would love to see a current picture of at least the outside of the house. We will all be visiting in OKC in July 2011 and would love to at least drive by your home.

    With warmest regards, SS

  12. Well ladies...you made my evening! My husband and I bought this house four years ago this month as our first home and it is still a work in progress for us. I have always wondered about the people that lived in this home previously and what they were like and did for a living. If you ever happen to run across any photos of their time in OKC (around the 1921-1925 period) I'd love to see them if you would be willing to share. I am attaching a link to my blog and to our Flickr account so you can see the photos we have taken previously of our home. We need to update them but you are welcome to keep up with the house through there!

  13. Christa - We will keep a lookout for the house. I visited the Flickr pages ..... could you give me a clue out of the 78 pages that you have up on the site, what pages I might find your house pix on? I loved your trip to Amsterdam but.....:) Blue Sage - is that your business?

    xoxo

  14. If you go to this page, you'll see three different sets of photos to look at; "Outside Our House", "The House Redone", and "Pictures of the House Before..."

Blue Sage isn't my business - I actually work for a large architecture/engineering firm.

    Enjoy!
