My husband is a pastor and volunteer chaplain for our local EMS (emergency medical services) department.  He is often called to sudden, unexpected death scenes. Arriving with little more than scant information about the deceased, his prayer book, and a container of anointing oil, he meets whichever family member or members are there, and assists workers on the scene by acting as a (Holy) diversion from some of the gruesome details involving medics, coroners, and funeral home workers.
On occasion being called to an unexpected accident or death scene of one of our own parish families, he is welcomed openly with grief and pleas to God for comfort.

Yet, on many calls, he finds himself in the midst of families with no religious or spiritual connection to assist them in their loss.  Ofttimes they quickly "take" to a pastor being there and other times they are somewhat confused why a person of faith has come to be with them.  More often than not, they almost unknowingly welcome the "insertion" of God into their midst.....into their midst when they least expect it.

It is a blessed calling......a strange and blessed calling to deliver messages from God to both believers and non-believers in the midst of devastating circumstances.  Thanks be to God that there are among us those willing to answer that blessed call.

  2. You are correct re the date being incorrect. Another one of those "started" posts and then not remembering the reflect the new date.

The icon - being into icons here lately.....I came across this little beauty in a "free" photos site in Google. I think it is charming thought it sort of went along with chaplain walking with God, walking with "other unknowns" etc. I need to research it a bit myself.

I was also very happy to see that Tess left some notes on icon producing in one of her notes in the last couple of days.....

Thanks for reading and commenting. SS
